The original Hammond design was way ahead of its time when it introduced the concept of presets. The lowest octave on the key-bed was actually a set of switches used to select from twelve factory-wired drawbar patterns, or registrations, if you prefer. Even though those twelve presets represented only a tiny fraction of the many possible tonal combinations, they could be quickly switched while playing and became some of the most common sounds you’d hear from the Hammond organ.
In the era of virtual instruments, we can take presets to another level by making those presets selectable via MIDI. Of course, every drawbar is also controllable via MIDI CCs, but your MIDI track can become quite cluttered if you attempt to automate all 20 drawbars in a MIDI sequence. Automating presets instead of individual drawbars can make for a tidier MIDI track.
The default view shows a beautifully-rendered photorealistic organ, but in a DAW project or on a laptop in a live situation you don’t really need to see those animated dancing keys. The B3-X offers something I’ve not seen in comparable products: a controls-only minimalist view that’s much appreciated by this user.
Here you’ll find everything you need to control the instrument during performance, minus unnecessary distractions: chorus, vibrato, percussion, Leslie speed, drawbars and drawbar presets. And the UI is sizeable, which is great if you’re running the B3-X on a laptop at a live gig.
If you’re not a Hammond aficionado, the graphical images on the preset buttons are a great aid for learning the most-used registrations (drawbar combinations). As you select presets, the drawbars also move in and out. I had played Hammonds for many years before I knew what the actual registrations were for the stock presets. Now I know even the obscure ones.
Laurent Hammond famously despised the Leslie speaker, and for years refused to allow Hammond dealers to also sell Leslies. That only changed after Mr. Hammond passed away, the company folded and the trademarks were purchased by Suzuki. Nowadays, you can buy new Hammonds and Leslies from the same manufacturer. Which is good, because most Hammond enthusiasts would not dream of playing through anything other than a Leslie speaker.
The B3-X comes with emulations of no less than five Leslie models. Plus controls that never existed in real Leslies such as Drive and EQ. In addition, you can even select the amplifier and cabinet independently. For example combining the 122’s more powerful amp with the 47’s mellower cabinet.
IK Multimedia Hammond free Leslie emulation is one of – if not the best – I’ve ever heard. You can tweak almost everything: spin-up and spin-down times, the horn/drum ratio, mic distance and angles and drive. It even has its own three-band parametric equalizer, useful even if not authentic. The only way you’re going to get a better clean Leslie sound (more on that in the Complaints section below) is with a real physical unit in a smooth, reverberant room. And even then you’d better have some good microphones.
The majority of Hammond players were content with the stock B3/Leslie combo. As it came from the factory and didn’t often add outboard effects. Mostly, that’s because the classic Hammond design does not make it an easy thing to do. Not so, of course, with a virtual Hammond. The B3-X comes with eight effects: distortion, chorus/vibrato, graphic equalizer, parametric equalizer, wah-wah, an 1176-style compressor and two reverbs.
