The haughty general from the Roman/Byzantine-inspired Empire, the Germanic barbarians from the cold north, it’s all a bit cliched, a bit too on the nose.

With that said, the map of Keldonia looks Fantasy General art, and the campaign makes you feel as though there is a world of competing interests, warring factions, civil wars, in short… a living world. But unlike the worlds of The Witcher or Warhammer, Keldonia is not fleshed out in any detail. Given the size of the development studio, I’m not expecting it to be. But that’s a shame, as it looks like it could be an exciting place.
Outside of the campaign, there are ten new units: five new frost trolls and five shadow creatures. There are two new heroes available: Filos and Moira. Like the heroes from the base game, they have their unique skill trees for players to explore. Again, some secondary heroes encountered throughout the campaign with their skill trees.
The press release states that a new faction added, namely, the Empire. This is not entirely true, as they were playable in the previous expansion, Onslaught. However, EA is the first Empire-specific campaign for the game.

Fantasy General Steam Online, both functions were already added to the game in a previous patch. With that said, the training ground abilities are tied to the heroes you have in your army. Given there are new heroes available in EA, I guess it’s fair to say that some new options are available. Some winter maps round out the latest additions.
At this point, you already know whether you like Fantasy General 2 and whether the gameplay loop still holds your interest. If you do, then I can recommend picking up this DLC pack.
Fantasy General 2 DLC Given the branching nature of the campaign, I can easily see people playing it at least twice. If you already own the Onslaught DLC, then purchasing EA also rounds out your experience—in terms of offering an entire campaign for each faction (Barbarian and Empire), along with the more sandbox-style Onslaught game mode. But unless you are specifically looking for a new story set in Caledonia, there’s not much else here to warrant a purchase.
Rudimentary repetition
Perhaps the biggest downside I’ve experienced while reviewing Fantasy General 2 was how egregiously repetitive it had become as time passed. In most cases, I found myself peppering the Empire’s troops with boulders from trolls or arrows from my skirmishers.
I’d put my heroes in front of tank hits. Then, I’d place them behind my melee units once more if they needed to heal for a turn. I’d use a magic spell to reveal parts of the map for ruins or caves, and I’d summon a floating specter that could reach those areas. I’ll kill the troops from the Empire or rival barbarian tribes, and maybe even some undead. Later, rinse, repeat.
After 20 or so missions, I found myself more enthralled by reloading earlier saves to upgrade materials, especially the rare “liquid mana” material for magic-based units. When you spend more time reloading saves in the middle of a battle, that’s never a good sign.
