I was amazed at how eager to learn the students were. Their parents were also totally supportive of our students’ education. Upon returning from Vietnam where I served as a lieutenant in the Army, I was assigned to an inner city bi-lingual middle school made up of 1st generation students. Almost all of their parents were not fluent in English. It was a real struggle to reach them. When I became an administrator I was finally able to institute programs to meet their needs.
